Senna Egyptian (Cassia senna): A natural medicine against constipation

What is the Senna Egyptian?
The Senna Egyption or Cassia Senna comes from a plant named Cassia Senna and belongs to the broader family of Herdopes. It is also known by its Latin name of Cassia angustifolia and it has played a significant role in the medicine history, starting from the people’s medicine many centuries ago and finally arriving to the medicine as has been advanced and we know it today!
Cassia, also known as Senna (a name taken by two Arab medical doctors, Serapion and Mesue al D-bal), was mainly cultivated in Khartoum and Nouvia, while it was directed towards Europe and Asia through Mediterranean sea, using camels, up to the Nile river!
More specifically, in the 11th century, Cassia arrived at the Venice port, while in the rest of Europe started its circulation after the Middle Ages.

NOTE: Cassia (Senna Egyptian) is in use since the 50’s decade as a powerful laxative!

The plant and its significance
Cassia is a bushy plant, reaching a height varying between ½ and 2 meters, mainly cultivated in India and in the countries around the Red Sea.
It has leaves of oval shape, with no fluff and its flowers are of a large size, with a brown-yellow colour, with free sepals and irregular shape.
Cassia’s fruit resembles that of bean, that means it is wide and contains 5 to 6 seeds.
ATTENTION: Cassia’s fruits are collected and dried for the preparation of drinks against constipation!

There are about 250 types of Egyptian Senna all over the world, while the most popular and classic type is the Alexandrian Senna, which can be found in commercial stores with healing herbs.

Why Cassia Senna became known to everyone?
Cassia Senna is being used as a natural laxative for many years, but which is the substance contained and gives this specific property to this herb?
The drastic substance present in the herb is called rhein acid, which is used in many commercial pharmaceutical formulas for its laxative action. There is also another substance as well (with excellent laxative properties) called antraquinone glycosides.
Besides there are some substances present called sennocides A and B functioning in the colon and they facilitate the transportation of stools. The hydrolysis and disintegration of these substances from the bacteria present in the intestine, produces the substance anthraquinone, already mentioned above.
We have to note here the strong antibacterial and antifungal action in the gastrointestinal system of the organism.
